Job Summary

The Department of Emergency Medicine is searching for a highly-motivated computational biologist to join the Max Harry Weil institute for Critical Care Research and Innovation's preclinical research team. This position is with a preclinical science and translational research team that focuses on management and treatment strategies for the critically ill and injured. Specific areas of interest and current focus include but are not limited to the development of pre-clinical animal models of hemorrhagic shock, sudden cardiac arrest, traumatic brain injury, sepsis, and acute respiratory distress syndrome. This role will be performing new complex data analyses that have to be performed with several new grants that the lab has received. The applicant will work closely with Director of the Weil Institute pre-clinical laboratory, the laboratory manager, and several research faculty and other research staff at the North Campus Research Complex (NCRC).

Responsibilities*

This role will be performing new complex data analyses that have to be performed with several new grants that the lab has received, including but not limited to gas chromatography processing and alignment for a volatile organic compounds and time series analysis. This will require developing computer modeling programs, reviewing literature to understand programming methodology to advance the modeling software, and analyzing and post-processing data. This role will provide the lab with knowledge of machine learning methodologies to analyze data and develop predictive analytics. A major focus of this role will be on independently evaluating and answering research questions in partnership with the lab collaborators using large data sets collected from the animal model experiments. The candidate must work effectively in a team setting and autonomously, and must communicate effectively. 

Required Qualifications*

  • Masters degree in related field 
  • At least 1 year of related experience.
  • Experience with data analysis, machine learning models, data storage and warehousing of data.
  • Experience handling and working with large animal in a research setting.

    The appropriate candidate must possess excellent organizational, multitasking, and communication skills, as well as the ability to function both independently and as part of a highly cohesive team. Basic computing skills and proficiency with the use of basic software such as Microsoft office (word, excel, etc.) is required. The candidate must have the ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Occasional evening and overnight shift availibility will be required

Desired Qualifications*

  • 2-3 years experience working with animals in a medical or laboratory setting preferred. 
  • Experience with data analysis, machine learning models, data storage and warehousing of data preferred. 
  • Large animal handling experience is preferred. Experience with research literature reviews, research publications, and grant applications preferred. 
  • The successful candidate will have excellent organizational and time management skills, good communication skills, the ability to work with minimal supervision, and strong enthusiasm for developing new skills and expertise.

Work Schedule

Full time, Monday thru Friday. The schedule is variable with some night, evening, and weekend shifts expected depending on the requirements of the study being performed.

Background Screening

Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer and may use a third party administrator to conduct background screenings.  Background screenings are performed in compliance with the Fair Credit Report Act. Pre-employment drug testing applies to all selected candidates, including new or additional faculty and staff appointments, as well as transfers from other U-M campuses.
