Job Summary

The Department of Biology is looking for students to work as laboratory assistants during the Winter 2025 semester in teaching labs. Lab assistant positions are filled on a per semester basis. Lab assistant weekly schedules are dependent on the course that they are assisting with. Lab assistants will report to the Natural Sciences Laboratory Supervisor and the instructor for their assigned course.

Responsibilities*

The primary responsibility of the Laboratory Assistant is helping faculty during teaching labs. This may include:

  • Answering student questions
  • Providing guidance with laboratory set up and procedures
  • Ensuring students are practicing good laboratory maintenance
  • Restocking supplies as utilized by students
  • Ensuring all safety protocols are being followed

This position may include supporting the faculty with the preparation of materials during their assigned lab section. Preparation of the lab could include set up of lab stations, assisting with good laboratory maintenance, and restocking inventory.

Required Qualifications*

  • Must be a currently enrolled UM-Flint student or recently graduated, within the last 6 months
  • Successful completion and understanding of the course that is being assigned, equivalent experience, or higher level biology labs
  • A demonstrated ability to apply laboratory safety rules
  • Must be friendly and approachable to all members of the classroom
  • Recommendation by a lab instructor from the Department of Biology

Desired Qualifications*

  • Excellent communication skills
  • A strong understanding of the material being presented
  • Ability to troubleshoot issues that may arise in the lab

Modes of Work

Onsite
The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence.  Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan

Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department. Work agreements are reviewed annually at a minimum and are subject to change at any time, and for any reason, throughout the course of employment. Learn more about the work modes.
