Responsibilities*

Reporting directly to the Engagement & Outreach Community Programs Manager, the program coordinator will be responsible for logistics and customer service aspects of Music, Theatre & Dance community engagement programs and other projects as assigned by the Community Programs Manager.

General Program Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to the Community Programs Manager, assisting with programs including Michigan Artist Citizens (MAC), Michigan's Success Through Artistry & Readiness (M-STARs), Performance Outreach, Performance Engagement Educational Residencies (PEERs), and Faculty led outreach activities.
  • Serve as key support for the JumpStart Theatre - Michigan program at SMTD
  • Support the growth and development of sustained, mutually beneficial community partnerships with guidance from the Community Programs Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with the University of Michigan's Standard Practice Guide 601.34 - Policy on Minors involved in university sponsored programs or programs held in university facilities with direct support from the E&O Administrative Associate.

Music, Theatre and Dance Community Engagement Programs:

  • Support, schedule, and coordinate Music, Theatre & Dance community engagement programming as outlined by the Community Programs Manager including, workshops, community classes, tours, outreach performances, and site visits.
  • Coordinate with SMTD Communications team on webpage updates and promotional materials.
  • Assist with space reservations on and off campus for community engagement programs.
  • Collaborate with  E&O Administration Associate to prepare contracts for faculty, guest artists, alumni, and students
  • Correspond with faculty, staff, students, university, and community agencies to prepare program support materials including  handbooks, schedules, and registration materials
  • Collaborate with teachers, schools, community organizations, and alumni to support program participation in coordination with the Community Programs Manager.
  • Coordinate with E&O Youth & Adult Programs Managers to support outreach activities to increase access and enrollment for summer intensives and community classes.

Jumpstart Theatre (JST) Program:

  • Serve as the lead mentor for the JumpStart Theatre program in schools in Detroit and Ypsilanti. The Program Coordinator attends rehearsals at the schools on a regular basis to provide guidance and support for the production process.
  • Coordinate with SMTD JST team to schedule regular mentor visits to each school (weekly in most cases) ensuring that casting, rehearsals, and the productions are all on track.
  • Provide guidance, support, resources, and encouragement to JumpStart Theatre students, teachers, and administrators
  • Serve as editor of the monthly JumpStart Theatre informational newsletter. Attend virtual/in-person meetings with SMTD JumpStart Theatre management team, providing timely, post-visit updates and collaborating on action items.
  • Coordinate the involvement of SMTD MAC student teaching artists as needed.
  • Partner with the JST team to coordinate 3 Theatre Boot Camps throughout the academic year. Attend JumpStart Theatre performances at Detroit and Ypsilanti schools. (February-May)
  • Provide administrative and logistical support for end of year Celebratory Showcase rehearsal and performance. (June).
  • Attend Professional Development training sessions.

Required Qualifications*

  • A Bachelor's Degree in the arts, arts education, arts management, or related field; experience working with K-12 students, parents and professional performing artists; experience with logistics for arts programs in the areas of scheduling, registration, and customer service.
  • Excellent computer, oral, and written communication skills. Excellent organizational skills with a commitment to the detailed implementation of program logistics, capacity to plan across several programs and anticipate workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, communities, and cultures. Work cooperatively with faculty, staff, students, and community partners.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision and as part of a dedicated team.
  • This position involves traveling to off-site locations as needed. 
  • Must have the ability to work evenings and weekends as needed to fully support events and programs.
  • This position routinely moves materials weighing up to 50lbs for various program needs.

Desired Qualifications*

  • An understanding and appreciation of higher education and the diverse cultures of the schools and colleges within the University. Understanding of policies and protocols is a plus.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite, FileMaker Pro, Adobe InDesign, Adobe Creative Suite, Mail Chimp, and Google cloud based environment.
  • Experience with grant writing and securing sponsorships is a plus.
  • Previous experience with the development, implementation, and assessment of outreach programs.
