The Validation, Transfer, and Registration (VTR) group within Quality Control (QC) manages analytical strategies for Biogen's QC methods in commercial and late clinical products. We transfer analytical methods into the QC Chemistry lab and external labs, manage changes or issues with these methods during their routine use, and provide related information in regulatory registrations. We ensure that Biogen can control the quality of our medicines, so that they will have the expected safety and efficacy profile for patients.
Position Description
To advance the robustness of analytical methods used for QC at Biogen, this internship is focusing on new techniques for separation and quantification of oligonucleotide (oligo) therapeutics and their impurities. These techniques will be easier to implement in labs worldwide, less prone to error or subjectivity, and greener in the reagents used.
- Day to day responsibilities include
- Preparation of liquid chromatography (LC) mobile phases and oligo samples
- Setting up LC instruments (UPLC/HPLC)
- Data acquisition, data analysis
- Modification of instrumental conditions to produce the desired separation effect
- Discussion with Biogen staff on project direction
- HPLC/UPLC conditions in published works will be used to inform the initial conditions and parameters to optimize
- Main deliverable: report, poster, and/or presentation on optimized HPLC/UPLC conditions for a given molecule
Example projects may include:
- Developing and optimizing a HPLC/UPLC method for purity analysis of oligos
- Trying out different mobile phases, columns, and parameters to improve the separation of impurities
- Analysis by mass spectrometry (MS) to determine identity of impurities
Qualifications
- Strong interest in/experience with one or more of the following analytical chemistry techniques: HPLC, UPLC, mass spectrometry (MS)
- Familiarity with oligo biochemistry
- Interest in understanding pharmaceutical quality control in support of manufacturing
To participate in the Biogen Internship Program, students must meet the following eligibility criteria:
- Legal authorization to work in the U.S.
- At least 18 years of age prior to the scheduled start date
- Be currently enrolled in an accredited community college, college or university, with a graduation date no earlier than August 2025.
Education
- Preferred: Graduate students in pharmaceutics, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or similar fields
- Will Consider: Rising 4th-year undergraduate students in pharmaceutics, chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or similar fields

- This role is on-site in Research Triangle Park, NC
